Be The Light

Be the light!

That is what I heard God speak to my heart.

It was clear, and slightly uncomfortable because I knew He was shifting me from my cozy corner in the back, to a visible space.

I am your typical introvert: a background chick happy to support those in the spotlight, who hates being the center of attention.

With that being said, I love people, and I sincerely want every person I come in contact with to know Jesus and develop an intimate relationship with Him.

In that moment, I knew God was urging me to step into my role as a speaker and a writer. God was moving me into a new season, and I wanted to try my best to obey.

I’ll be honest – it was (and is) hard.

My mind was racing with so many thoughts.

“I don’t really do “visible.”

“What exactly does it mean to be the light?”

“I don’t have anything profound to say.”

“My voice might shake. I write like I speak. Is that good enough?”

Then, one day in my quiet time with God, He led me to Matthew 5:14 – 16 that says, “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

This scripture confirmed what I already knew; I can’t hide!

When God gives you a call, He prepares you for that call, and we should respond in obedience.

When God gives you a calling, He prepares you for it, and wants you to respond to it in obedience.

God wanted me to share my testimony and the revelations He has shared with me, as a way to lead others to Christ. Every loss, every victory and every lesson learned. Everything that God allowed me to go through in my life at this point, He wants to use to impact others. He wants to use my life to bring those who don’t know Christ to Him, and to draw those that do know Christ, even closer.

As Christian communicators, we are to use the gifts and talents that God has given us, along with the wisdom He has taught us through our life experiences, to bring Him glory. As Matthew says, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works (the things God has graced you to overcome and do) – and not focus on you – but be drawn to God.

When we share the impact God’s word has had on our lives, by sharing our story, our testimony, God gets the glory. That is what it means to BE THE LIGHT.

God may use you as the vessel, but the light shines on Him.

In the words of author Matthew Maher, “Your life may be the only Bible that somebody reads. Are you legible?”

Reflection Questions:

  1. What work/assignment has God put on your heart to do?
  2. Are you walking in obedience to what God has asked you to do? If not, why?
  3. What actions can you take today, to start walking in obedience to God?
  4. If your life were the only Bible that someone would read, would they want to know Jesus?
